Prince Hill Vineyard

Welcome to our eponymous estate vineyard in the heart of Dundee Hills, Oregon.

More than any other grape, Pinot Noir needs the right environment to truly excel.

In 1983, 15 years after planting his first vines in the Willamette Valley soils, Oregon Pinot pioneer Dick Erath discovered his ideal site, choosing an auspicious 34-acre plot high in the hills west of the town of Dundee. In this cool, damp climate, the site’s southern exposure soaks up Oregon’s precious sunlight while its porous volcanic soils easily drain the abundant rainfall.

This vineyard he planted, Prince Hill, and those around it became the epicenter of the Oregon wine industry, producing Pinot Noir whose distinct character would become emblematic of the Dundee Hills appellation: a beguiling mix of red fruit, heady spice and grounding earth notes on a silky, succulent body, a mineral texture and a capacity to age.

Prince Hill Vineyard features an immaculate outlay of Oregon’s famous Jory soil. Red in hue, this volcanic silty clay loam drains well, which enhances ripening, and imbues wines with a signature red fruit profile, accents of spice and earth and a vivacious, juicy drinkability.

Critical for ripening Pinot Noir in Oregon’s generally cool climate, Prince Hill’s situation in the Dundee Hills is protected by the coastal range from wet, windy coastal storms and by the Chehalem mountains from harsh northern weather.

The vineyard is planted heavily with Dick Erath’s signature Clone 95 Pinot Noir. Over 20 years in its making and refinement, the clone was discovered in the Burgundy Grand Cru vineyard Clos Vougeot and propagated by Erath at Prince Hill. Now in great demand throughout the Willamette Valley, this variety of Pinot Noir offers complexity, nuance and hardiness to its wines.
